            Lecture 9:00 am to 4:00 pm 

14 MCE Participation Credit Hours / Course Code: 490 

Participants will receive up to 34 MCE participation credit hours towards mastership

Upon completion of their presentation at the Fall 2023 Empire State Masters Program 

This program is open to all dentists including pre-fellows as credit is applied towards Mastership

Presentation by Dr. Ye Shi:

Dr. Ye Shi is Clinical Assistant Professor of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry Department at NYU College of Dentistry. Dr. Shi received her DDS degree from Nanjing Medical University College of Dentistry in China, 2011. She completed a 3-year post-graduate residency and accomplished her masters degree of Prosthodontics in Pecking Union Medical College, China, 2014. Afterward, she came to United States for further training. She first competed 3-year training in the Advanced Program for International Dentists in Implant Dentistry at NYU College of Dentistry. Following that, she completed her post graduate training in periodontology for another 3 years in the Advanced Education Program of Periodontics at NYU College of Dentistry. Dr. Shi is a diplomate of American Board of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, as well as a diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). She is an active member of Academy of Osseointegration (AO), International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the American Association of Periodontology (AAP) and committee member of Global University Task Force and Clinical Innovation Committee of Academy of Osseointegration. She was invited to lecture nationally and internationally, participating in meetings and symposiums worldwide. She has received numerous awards for her clinical research, which she has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented more than ten scientific posters both in the US and internationally.

9:00 AM - 12:00PM: Esthetic and Functional Crown Lengthening

  • Differential diagnosis of excessive gingival display

Course content: 

Crown lengthening is a commonly used surgical procedure in the daily practice for both esthetic and functional purpose. For esthetic crown lengthening, it is important to identify the etiology of the “gummy smile” and choose the surgical treatment accordingly. For functional crown lengthening, it is often-time underestimated. The key to success is to understand biology. How much bone should be removed?

1:00PM – 4:00PM:  Implant Treatment in the Esthetic Area 

Course objective:

  • Important esthetic consideration in treatment planning phase
  • Periodontal evaluation including bone and soft tissue
  • Different treatment options and surgical techniques
  • Socket preservation
  • 3D position of implant placement
  • Immediate implant with provisional

Course content: 

Implant in the anterior esthetic zone is one of the most challenging scenario for the clinicians. There are different surgical techniques and timing of implant placement as treatment options, such as immediate implant, socket shield technique etc. In order to avoid esthetic complication and achieve optimal outcome, proper treatment planning and case selection are the key. The lecture will discuss the important parameters and considerations in treatment plan phase and also different surgical techniques in the treatment phase.

 Part 2 Sunday, March 5 - In-person at learning center - Whitestone, NY:

9:00 AM - 12:00PM: Incision and Flap Management in Periodontal Surgery- Part 1

Course objective:

  • Wound healing of periodontal surgery
  • Surgical treatment of periodontitis
  • Incision and flap management in crown lengthening procedure
  • Incision and flap management in implant procedure
  • Root coverage procedure
  • Different suturing techniques and when to apply them

Course content: 

Incision and flap management are crucial in periodontal surgery, including surgical treatment of periodontitis, mucogingival plastic surgery, as well as implant related surgery. The lecture will demonstrate various techniques in terms of incision/flap design and suturing techniques in different clinical scenario. Oftentimes, it can be confusing to know which technique to choose. The key is to understand the basic principle.  This course will highlight the fundamental of soft and hard tissue wound healing in order to have better understanding of each surgical techniques.

1:00PM – 4:00PM: Hands-on Incision and Flap Management in Periodontal Surgery - Part 2

Course objective:

  • Incision and flap design in periodontal surgery
  • Incision and flap design in implant surgery
  • Suturing techniques

Course content: 

Various techniques in terms of incision/flap design and suturing techniques will be demonstrated on a typodont.

The Empire State Mastership Track is a “Protocol” program that complies with the standards and guidelines of AGD’s Council on Dental Education. In order to receive full participation credit the participant will be required to do a case presentation based on an in-office procedure that reflects the material taught by the instructor. The fee for this program includes the case presentation session, held approximately 6 months after the initial meeting.  This program is open to all dentists including pre-fellows as credit is applied towards Mastership.

The New York State constituent of the Academy of General Dentistry is an approved PACE provider.  The sponsor's formal CDE programs are acceptable by the AGD for Fellowship, Mastership and maintenance credit.  Approval does not imply acceptance by a state of provincial board of dentistry. The current term of approval extends from 1/01/21 to 12/31/22.  AGD Code#219318
