About the Speakers
James R. Keenan DDS, MAGD
Dr. Keenan graduated from NYU College of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at Peninsula Hospital Center. Dr. Keenan is a clinical assistant professor in the department of Oral Maxillofacial Pathology Radiology and Medicine at NYU Dentistry. He serves as the director of Clinical Management of Special Needs Patients and oversees the students in the Oral Health Center for Patients with Disabilities. He also serves as a mentor for Integrative Case Presentations and a facilitator for Peer Assessment. In 2020, Dr. Keenan was inducted into the NYU Academy of Distinguished Educators. Dr. Keenan provides general dentistry in private practice in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Dr. Jason Kyles DDS
Dr. Kyles earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. He holds a Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from New York Presbyterian Queens. Currently, he is serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Kyles is actively involved in the Oral Health Care Center for People with Special Needs, where he leads and mentors dental students in providing care to patients with complex medical conditions. Here he manages students focusing on both general dental care and oral medicine, ensuring comprehensive treatment for individuals with diverse and challenging health needs.
Course Goals:
- Increase Awareness and Understanding of the Special Needs population
- Enhance participants' clinical skills in adapting dental procedures to meet the specific needs of patients with various special needs conditions.
- Introduce evidence-based approaches for effective communication and behavior management during dental procedures for special needs patients.
- Provide insights on creating a welcoming and sensory-friendly dental environment to ensure a positive experience for special needs patients.
- Promote collaboration between dental professionals and other healthcare providers, educators, and caregivers to deliver comprehensive care for special needs patients.
- Evaluate and Implement Best Practices
By achieving these goals and objectives, the workshop aims to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate approach to dental care, ensuring that individuals with special needs receive the attention and support necessary for maintaining optimal oral health.
For the hands-on Sunday, September 28
In a workshop for Special Needs Dentistry, it's essential to include interactive and practical activities to enhance participants' understanding and skills.
Case Studies and Group Discussions:
· Participants will to analyze case studies involving patients with various special needs.
· Discuss challenges faced during treatment and propose solutions based on best practices and evidence-based approaches.
Simulated Patient Encounters:
· Participants will experience simulated scenarios with patients with different special needs.
· Allow participants to practice communication, examination, and treatment techniques in a controlled environment.
Hands-On Adaptation Techniques:
· Hands-on training on adapting dental tools and equipment to accommodate patients with special needs.
· Allow participants to practice modifying instruments for better accessibility and comfort.
Sensory-Friendly Environment Design:
· Discuss practical modifications that can be made to create a calming atmosphere for patients with sensory sensitivities.
These activities aim to engage participants actively, promote practical skill development, and foster a collaborative learning environment focused on improving dental care for individuals with special needs.
